Our Clipper 60s

Our Clipper 60s were built in 1996 to compete in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Competing against each other in a fleet of 8 identical boats, our Clippers Serica and Mermerus have sailed thousands of miles against each other. Proven, strong and safe ocean race yachts, they are a fantastic boat to try sailing with a hands on approach.

History - proven ocean race yachts

The format of the Clipper Race was conceived in 1995 by the famous round the world yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnson and on 16 October 1996 eight Clipper 60s left Plymouth to race around the World.

The race offered paying amateur crew members the chance to sail around the world, aboard a fleet of identical yachts. The route was selected to be mainly downwind sailing, similar to that of the traditional Tea Clippers, following the prevailing wind and currents. The first race took a route starting from Plymouth and then sailing to Madeira, Fort Lauderdale, Panama, Galapagos, Hawaii, Yokohama, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seychelles, Durban, Cape Town, Salvador (Brazil), the Azores and back to Plymouth.

The fleet of eight Clipper 60s were built by Colvic Craft in Essex using the design of the proven Camper and Nicholson Bluewater 58, a prestigious cruising yacht designed by the American designer David Pedrick. Modifications were made to the cruising version and included a new deck layout better suited to Ocean Racing and an enlarged rig.

Today - commercially coded, MCA licensed

Our Clipper 60s are MCA (Maritime & Coastguard Agency) commercially coded vessels. Due to the size of our vessels and number of passengers we take, we are inspected for coding every year by an external YDSA MCA Coding Level 1 Surveyor. We own all of our boats - we are not taking you out on hired in or 'managed' boats.

We are commercially licensed to operate up to 60 miles offshore, well above what our range of sailing experiences necessitates, but we take safety extremely seriously. Our boats are maintained and equipped to the highest standards, which is backed up by our Safety Management System. There are always a minimum of two professional staff aboard for each trip, a Skipper and a 1st Mate.

Most importantly, we have a track record of owning, maintaining and operating commercially 60ft Ocean Race Yachts since 2003.
