Tracy Edwards MBERan on 14 June 2017
Tracy took part in her first Whitbread Round the World Race as cook aboard ‘Atlantic Privateer’ in 1985/86 becoming the first woman to race around the world on a Maxi. Upon completion she decided to enter the first all-female crew in the 1989/90 Whitbread and ‘Maiden’ crossed the start line on 2nd Sept 1989 and sailed into the history books. ‘Maiden’ went on to win two of the legs and came second in class overall. The best result for a British boat since 1977 and the best result for an all-female crew ever. In 2014 Tracy created The Maiden Factor which has successfully rescued Maiden from abandonment in the Seychelles. Maiden is currently being restored at Hamble yacht Services ready for re-launch in 2018. Once restored, this iconic piece of British Maritime History will undertake a world tour to raise funds for Maiden Education and other charities dedicated to facilitating education for girls not currently afforded that basic human right.
Xavier Baker30th June - £10 per person
Xavier Baker, co-founder of the Isle of Wight Distillery brings a master class in gin cocktails to Hamble with an evening talk about out how gin is made, the history of gin and how it's best served!
The Isle of Wight Distillery is the first and only distillery on the island and there are no known records or history of distilling on the Isle of Wight so Xavier is proud to be making history. Using local ingredients sourced from the Island the distillery even handpicks a number of seeds to create their range of spirits.
Taking a slightly different format to the other talks, Xavier will conclude his talk by showing us how to make a range of cocktails. The cost of the talk includes two free cocktails and more are available to purchase throughout the evening, along with a range of Gins and other spirits from the Isle of Wight Distillery. As the evening goes on, the lights go down and the music goes up as our coffee shop becomes a cocktail gin bar!
