Nab Tower Challenge

Looking for something a bit more than a sail around the Solent? How about taking on the Nab Tower Challenge? A 35 nautical mile dash from Hamble around the Nab Tower positioned 6 miles South of England and 5 miles East of the Isle of Wight.  The route will take you through the Napoleonic Forts outside Portsmouth marking the entrance to the Solent and out into the English Channel before turning around the Nab Tower and heading back to Hamble.

This challenge has a bit of everything! With the usual prevailing winds, it’s hopefully a fast downwind reach out, followed by some nice upwind sailing on the way home.  Starting in the calm waters of the Solent moving to more exciting seas around the Nab Tower this experience incorporates sailing in the more sheltered Solent waters with sailing in the offshore waters for which this Ocean Race Yacht was designed.

Arrive around 8:30 and check in ready for the day before gathering in our coffee shop over looking the boats with views across the Solent. At 9am you are taken down to the boat for a safety brief and introduction to how the yacht works and her history. It’s then all hands on deck as we rig Mermerus and slip lines for the short motor out of the River Hamble towards the start line off Calshot Spit.

It’s a long day of sailing with lunch and snacks served under sail as we battle around the Tower. With great views of the Solent and the stunning Eastern Isle of Wight, it's a fun filled hands on experience with a nice mixture of sheltered sailing in the famous waters of the Solent to coastal sailing around the Nab Tower in more lively seas.

We recommend you have sailed before for this experience, however, if you are keen and willing, we’ll show you the ropes even if it’s your first time sailing.

Nab Tower Challenge

Important stuff to know:

Where we sail: From Hamble Point Marina in Hamble, out to the Nab Tower and back

9am to 5pm (the finish time can sometimes be earlier, or later – depending on the weather!)

Maximum participants: Up to 10 per yacht

Selected Sundays from April to October, approx once or twice a month.

A baguette lunch, soft drinks and tea and coffee as well as all the safety kit such as lifejackets and wet weather clothing are provided as part of the day.

You must be at least 16 to come on this day and if you are 16 or 17 you must book with a parent or guardian.

There are a number of steps and a ladder inside the yacht, if you think you might need assistance to move around, we would ask you book with someone who can give you a helping hand.

This is a full day sailing experience including travelling through the waters outside of the shelter of the Isle of Wight on our way to the Nab Tower, which at times can be rougher than within the Solent. It is advised you have sailed before coming on this experience, or are keen to get stuck in. Moderate to good levels of fitness are required.
