A match race around the Isle of Wight is the perfect opportunity to experience sailing aboard these powerful yachts, whilst enjoying the thrill of racing. Taking these Ocean Race Yachts into the offshore waters for which they were designed, you will become a valued member of our racing crew and by the end of the day you should be working as part of a slick and efficient racing team. With everyone on board having the opportunity to try out all the different roles aboard the yacht from taking the wheel to working on the foredeck, this is your opportunity to truly experience racing aboard a 60ft Ocean Race Yacht.
Join the yachts at 8am for a quick safety brief, before we motor out of the River Hamble to our start line off Cowes. Then it is your first chance to experience the excitement of racing against a matched yacht as we hoist sails and begin the battle, all under the guidance of our experienced professional Skipper and Mate.
Then we will race out of the Solent and into the open water on the South side of the Isle of Wight, all the time keeping a close eye on the performance of the other yacht and ensuring that we are achieving the best possible speeds to win the race. About 6 hours later we will return back into the Solent where both navigation and boat speed play an important part in determining the winner in this closely fought race as we return to the finish line off Cowes. You will have plenty of opportunities to put any existing sailing skills into practice and learn new ones during this hands on, exhilarating day of racing.
In the event that weather conditions are not suitable for a safe rounding of the Isle of Wight, the course for the race may be changed to an alternative equivalent route.
Round The Isle of Wight Match RaceImportant stuff to know:
Where we sail: On the Solent, from Hamble Point Marina in Hamble
8am to 7pm (the finish time can sometimes be earlier – weather permitting!)
Maximum participants: Up to 12 per yacht
Selected dates from April to September, approx once or twice a month. We can only run this experience when the tides are correct to go around the Isle of Wight, which does limit which dates can be run.
A baguette lunch, soft drinks and tea and coffee as well as all the safety kit such as lifejackets and wet weather clothing are provided as part of the day.
You must be at least 16 to come on this day and if you are 16 or 17 you must book with a parent or guardian.
There are a number of steps and a ladder inside the yacht, if you think you might need assistance to move around, we would ask you book with someone who can give you a helping hand.
This is a long experience sailing in the waters South of the Isle of Wight, which at times can be rougher than within the Solent. It is advised you have sailed before coming on this experience. Moderate to good levels of fitness and ability are required.
